Abisko is one of Sweden’s first national parks and has even a rich history of both life of the Sami population, tourism and for artists going there. Abisko 1:1 is a series of cameraless images, even called photograms. That means, the images are exactly the same size as the objects that are depicted. To take those pictures I use light sensitive darkroom paper that I expose with a strobe in direct contact with the objects depicted. The images are taken at night, protecting the paper with a makeshift darkroom tent that I build for every exposure. When exposing I am in direct contact with the motif, depending on feeling it with my hands – a radically different experience compared to conventional landscape photography, getting closer to how the environment is seen by animals like ptarmigans, lemmings and mosquitoes. For each image I recorded the exact GPS data of the spot that makes it possible to go back over time and find traces of a changing climate.
Thanks to STF – the Swedish Tourist Association, in Abisko, for their support!
